What the Boxing Quiz is

The Boxing Quiz is a set of trivia questions covering the sport's history, its current landscape and the sort of detail a dedicated fan picks up over years of watching. It's built for anyone who wants to find out how much they actually know, and it works whether you've followed boxing for six months or six decades.

There's no login, no scoreboard sent off anywhere, and no pressure to finish in one sitting. You answer, you find out if you were right, and you move on. That simplicity is the point of a quiz like this: it's a bit of fun that happens to sharpen your recall of names, records and moments along the way.

What kind of questions come up

The questions draw from across the sport, so a session might move from a heavyweight title fight from decades ago to something that happened in the current calendar year. Broadly, you can expect questions to touch on:

  • Fighters and their records, including champions from different eras and weight classes
  • Famous fights and moments that shaped a division or a rivalry
  • Sanctioning bodies, titles and how unification works
  • Weight classes and how the divisions fit together
  • Promoters, venues and the business side of the sport

If you want the background on any of those areas before you take the quiz, our weight class guide is a good place to firm up the divisions, and the articles section covers plenty of the history and context that questions might draw on.

Why a quiz result isn't the final word

Boxing records change. A fighter's win-loss tally on the day you take the quiz might not match the tally a year later, and older fights sometimes get reassessed as more footage or record-keeping comes to light. We've put the questions together in good faith, but a trivia quiz is a way to test and enjoy your knowledge. Where a specific fact matters to you, it's worth checking it against a current source.

Getting more out of a session

A few things help if you want the quiz to actually teach you something rather than just confirm what you already know:

  • Read the explanation after each answer, if one is given
  • Take it again after a break. Recall improves the second time round, and you'll notice which topics you guessed on
  • Use a wrong answer as a prompt to read up on that fighter or fight

If a question sends you down a rabbit hole on a fighter or era you don't know well, that's arguably the best outcome a quiz like this can have. We'd rather you finish having learned something than finish with a high score and nothing else.

Where to go next

The quiz sits alongside the rest of what we do on the site: news as it breaks, previews of upcoming cards and a fight calendar you can check before any big weekend. If a question stumps you and you want the fuller story, our features on the flyweight division and Japan's current crop of fighters are both good starting points for topics the quiz touches on lightly. And if you're comparing two fighters properly, the fighter comparison tool guide covers that.
